Unable to edit XFA forms

Last updated on Apr 30, 2026

Learn how to work with XFA forms that can't be directly edited in Adobe Acrobat.

XFA forms contain XML data that defines the form structure, layout, and behavior. Adobe Acrobat Pro (version 2020 and later) does not support direct editing of this XML data.

You can use two workarounds to modify an XFA form in Acrobat Pro: Save the form as a PostScript file or print it as an Adobe PDF. Acrobat Standard and Acrobat Reader do not support the workarounds described on this page.

Caution

If you edit an XFA form in Acrobat using a workaround, the resultant PDF or form will be flattened and lose all form fields, layers, interactive objects, buttons, and JavaScript.
