When you try to print a PDF file in Internet Explorer 7 on Windows Vista, the file does not print and you receive the error message "Could not start print job."

The Display PDF In Browser option is selected in Adobe Acrobat 8 or 9 or in Adobe Reader 8 or 9. (To see this option in Acrobat or Adobe Reader, choose Edit > Preferences > Internet.)

Protected Mode is enabled in the Internet Explorer Security settings.

Protected Mode redirects files to a secure Virtualized folder, which replicates the folder structure on your computer but keeps the files isolated from the rest of your computer to protectyou from malicious software.

Do one of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Temporarily disable Protected Mode in Internet Explorer 7.

  1. In Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options.
  2. Choose the Security tab.
  3. Deselect the checkbox labeled Enable Protected Mode.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Close Internet Explorer.
  6. Re-open Internet Explorer.
  7. Browse to the PDF file that you want to print.
  8. Choose File > Print.

Warning: Protected Mode can protect your computer from malicious software. You should enable Protected Mode again after you have printed the PDF.

Solution 2: Use Acrobat or Adobe Reader to print the PDF file.

  1. In Internet Explorer, browse to the PDF file that you want to print.
  2. Choose File > Save As.
  3. Navigate to the location where you want to save the PDF file.
  4. Click Save.
  5. Open Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
  6. Choose File > Open.
  7. Navigate to the location you chose in Step 3.
  8. Select the PDF file.
  9. Click Open.
  10. Choose File > Print.

Solution 3: Use a different web browser.

Use a different web browser, such as Firefox or Opera, to print the PDF file.
