When you start Adobe Acrobat 9 on Windows Vista, you see the error message, "A serious error has been detected and Adobe EPIC_APP cannot continue. Please reinstall the application and try again."


This issue is usually due to licensing problems.


Try one of the following solutions:

Solution 1: Change FLEXNet Licensing Service startup to "Manual".

  1. Select Start
  2. Select Run
  3. Enter Services.msc
  4. Select OK
  5. Double click FLEXNet Licensing Service
  6. Change the Starup type: to "Manual"

Solution 2: Run Acrobat.exe as administrator once so it can activate the license.

  1. Right click Acrobat.exe
  2. Select "Run as"
  3. Select Administrator's Account

Solution 3: Uninstall Acrobat and reinstall with Admin privileges.

  1. Uninstall Acrobat from the system
  2. Do a clean reboot of Windows Vista
  3. Install Acrobat with Administrator privileges
    1. Right click setup.exe
    2. Select Properties
    3. Select Compatibility Tab
    4. Select run as Administrator
    5. Run Acrobat once from an administrators account to access Shell32.dll and set the proper settings.
