Error 177 causes installation failure

Last updated on Oct 14, 2026

Learn how to resolve error code 177, "The installation path selected is too long," during Adobe app installation.

Error code 177 appears when the chosen installation folder contains a long or complex file path that the installer cannot read.

The installer can’t read the selected install location

To resolve the error, change the install location to a shorter folder path in the Creative Cloud desktop app.

Select the Creative Cloud   icon in the Windows taskbar or the macOS menu bar to open the Creative Cloud desktop app.

Select the Account   icon in the upper-right corner, and then select Preferences.

The Account menu shows options like Preferences, Sign out, and monthly generative credits.
The Account menu provides access to account settings, subscription details, sign-out options, and Preferences for managing Creative Cloud desktop app settings.

Select Apps from the left panel.

Adobe Creative Cloud preferences panel open on the “Apps” tab, showing options for auto-update, install location, and bandwidth use.
Use the Apps section to manage automatic updates and installation settings for Creative Cloud apps.

Select the edit    icon next to the Install location, then choose a shorter path to install your Creative Cloud apps.

For example, use C:\Adobe instead of a long path such as C:\Users\YourName\Documents\Work Files\2025\Adobe Creative Cloud\Programs.

Adobe Creative Cloud preferences panel open on the “Apps” tab, highlighting the “Installing” section where users can set the default install location.
Changing the installation location does not affect apps already installed. New installations use the updated path, helping reduce the risk of long-path installation issues.

Select Done to save your changes.

Install the app again.

Your app should now install successfully using the updated location. If the issue persists, review your installation logs to identify the specific fatal error causing the failure.
