To open a new sequence in the Timeline panel, double-click the sequence in the Project panel. The sequence opens in a new tab.

Learn how to efficiently navigate sequences in Adobe Premiere Pro using the Timeline panel.
You can remove all sequences from the Timeline panel or add multiple sequences. Each sequence appears as a tab within that timeline. You can also open multiple timelines, each within its own frame, with each containing any number of sequences.
You can show or hide items by selecting or deselecting them in the Timeline panel menu. These items include time ruler numbers and the work area bar.
Open a sequence in the Timeline panel
You can also open more than one timeline if you have more than one sequence in a project. When you open a sequence, it opens in a new tab. Drag the tab into another docking area. The sequence appears in a new timeline.
Position playhead in the Timeline panel
You can position the playhead in multiple ways.
Time ruler:
Select or drag the playhead directly in the time ruler. To snap to clip edges and markers, shift-drag the playhead in the Timeline panel.
Playhead Position:
- Drag the timecode to scrub.
- Select Playhead Position, type a timecode, and use Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS).
Program Monitor:
Use playback buttons to move the playhead.
For keyboard shortcuts:
- Use the Left or Right arrow keys to move one frame.
- Hold Shift + Arrow keys to move five frames at a time.
Use timecode for precise navigation
Select the Playhead Position timecode field.
Type a new time and press Enter (Windows) or Return (macOS). For further efficiency, use these timecode shorthand substitutes.
Zoom in and out of sequences
Zoom in and out of sequences using any of these techniques.
For keyboard shortcuts:
- Use + to zoom in.
- Use – to zoom out.
Make sure the Timeline panel is active when using these shortcuts.
Use the horizontal zoom scroll bar at the bottom-centre of the Timeline panel.
- Drag the edges inward to zoom in.
- Drag the edges outward to zoom out.
With the Timeline panel selected, pinch to zoom using the trackpad.
Scroll horizontally in a sequence
When working with long sequences, some clips may be out of view. To scroll horizontally and reveal hidden parts of your sequence, use any of the following methods.
Note
The Timeline panel does not need to be selected, but your mouse must be hovering over it.
For keyboard shortcuts:
- Use Page Up to scroll left.
- Press Page Down to scroll right.
To scroll horizontally through the sequence, drag the horizontal scroll bar at the bottom centre of the Timeline panel left or right.
Use two fingers to swipe left or right on a multi-touch trackpad to scroll through the sequence.
Scroll vertically in a sequence
When video or audio clips are stacked up in tracks on the timeline, they can sometimes be hidden from view. Use one of these techniques to scroll vertically.
