Learn how to refine selections in Photoshop using View Modes and refinement methods for greater accuracy and control.
The Properties panel provides multiple settings to adjust visibility, precision, and refinement methods for more accurate results.
View Mode settings
- View Mode: Choose how your selection is displayed.
- Onion Skin: Displays the selection as an onion skin overlay against the background, with adjustable transparency.
- Marching Ants: Shows the selection border as marching ants.
- Overlay: Displays the unselected areas in a transparent color overlay (default is red).
- On Black: Places the selection on a black background.
- On White: Places the selection on a white background.
- Black and White: Displays the selection as a black and white mask.
- On Layers: Surrounds the selection with transparency.
- Show Edge: Displays the area of refinement.
- Show Original: Displays the original selection before refinement.
- High Quality Preview: Renders a more accurate preview of changes but may affect performance.
- Transparency/Opacity: Adjusts the visibility of the selection against its background.
- Real-time Refinement: Updates the preview while brushing with refinement tools. When deselected, results appear after releasing the mouse button.
- Shortcuts: Press F to cycle through modes or X to temporarily turn off all modes.
Refine modes
- Color Aware: Best for high-contrast or straightforward backgrounds.
- Object Aware: Best for refining selections of hair, fur, or objects against complex backgrounds.
