Create and evaluate attributes using Analyzer in Acrobat

Last updated on Aug 24, 2026

Learn how attributes work by creating sample attributes, reviewing their extracted values, and using the results to refine a document set.

This guided exercise uses sample documents and predefined values so you can experience the attribute workflow from creation through export. It focuses on how the pieces work together rather than documenting every available attribute setting.

Before you begin

For this exercise:

  • The Home page provides 40 sample documents: 20 sales agreements and 20 vendor agreements.
  • The sample content demonstrates how the same attribute can extract information across different agreement types.
  • You will create three custom attributes and review the results against the sample documents.

Create the sample attributes

From Home, select Create attributes for analysis.

Analyzer Home page with the Create attributes for analysis tile.
The sample workflow starts from Home so you can build and evaluate attributes without preparing your own document set.

The All attributes page opens with the custom attribute configuration panel.

Create the following three attributes using the supplied values.

Audit rights

What it finds: Clauses that give either party the right to audit books, records, or physical locations to confirm contractual compliance.

  • Attribute name: Audit rights
  • Attribute type: Text
  • Attribute mode: Strict
  • Document type: Legal Policy and Compliance Documents
  • Attribute group: Legal review
  • Attribute definition: Clauses that give any party the right to audit the books, records, or physical locations of the counterparty to ensure compliance with the contract.

Revenue/profit sharing

What it finds: Clauses where one party can share revenue or profit based on company value or financial-performance milestones.

  • Attribute name: Revenue/profit sharing
  • Attribute type: Text
  • Attribute mode: Strict
  • Document type: Legal Policy and Compliance Documents
  • Attribute group: Legal review
  • Attribute definition: Clauses indicating one party is entitled to share revenue or profit with the counterparty that are contingent on company value or financial performance milestones. Include royalty arrangements and bonuses tied to revenue or valuation targets. Exclude fixed payments or grants with no performance condition.

Non-compete restrictions

What it finds: Clauses that restrict a party from competing, promoting or distributing competing products, or working for competitors.

  • Attribute name: Non-compete restrictions
  • Attribute type: Text
  • Attribute mode: Strict
  • Document type: Legal Policy and Compliance Documents
  • Attribute group: Legal review
  • Attribute definition: Restrictions preventing a party from competing in business, promoting, marketing, or distributing competing products, or working for competitors. Include geographic or time limitations and carve-outs. Exclude exclusivity arrangements, endorsement restrictions, or clauses stating that no restriction exists.

Using known sample definitions lets you focus on how attribute configuration affects the extracted results.

Review the initial extracted values

After creating the attributes, review the extracted values to confirm that Analyzer applied them as expected.

Select a document to open the right-hand panel and review all extracted attributes and values for that document.

Evaluation provides a controlled way to refine a definition before applying changes more broadly.

To verify an extracted value against its source, select its numbered citation. The document opens at the source content with the extracted attributes displayed alongside it.

Citations let you verify an extracted result against the exact document content used to support it.

You can also export attribute values to a CSV file to review results across multiple documents.

For a quick comparison in the collection view, use Adjust attribute view to choose the attributes you want to display as columns. Position the pointer over an extracted value to view its full text.

Viewing multiple documents together makes it easier to spot extraction patterns and inconsistent results.

Evaluate and refine an attribute

After reviewing the initial results, evaluate an attribute against sample documents to determine whether its definition needs refinement.

Open the attribute and select Evaluate attribute.

Evaluation lets you test an attribute against selected documents before applying changes more broadly.

An attribute may produce results that are too broad, too narrow, or inconsistent. Use the evaluation results to determine whether you need to adjust its definition or examples.

Select Evaluate attribute to test the attribute against sample documents.

Review evaluation results

After the evaluation completes, review the results for each selected document to determine whether the attribute is extracting the expected value.

The results table shows:

  • {Attribute name} — The extracted value.
  • Attribution Content — The source content that supports the extracted value.
  • Explanation — The assumptions and conditions Analyzer used to determine the value.
  • User feedback — Feedback you provided during evaluation.

To examine a result in context, position the pointer over the file name and select Review.

The document opens with the source content and attribute details displayed together. Compare the extracted value with its source content to determine whether the attribute is working as expected.

If a result is incorrect or incomplete, provide feedback and refine the attribute definition or examples. Evaluate the attribute again to verify your changes.

Use extracted values to narrow the collection

Apply attribute filters when you want to focus on documents that meet specific criteria.

You can combine filters from different attributes to progressively narrow the collection to the documents relevant to your current analysis.

Filtering changes only the displayed results. It does not modify the documents or extracted values.

Export the results

When the collection contains the documents and extracted values you want to work with, export the results to a CSV file.

The export lets you review the extracted values in a spreadsheet, share them with other users, or use them in another reporting workflow.

At this point, you have completed the basic attribute workflow:

Define what you want to extract.

Review the initial results.

Evaluate and refine the definition.

Use extracted values to identify relevant documents.

Export the resulting data.
