Create custom attributes in Adobe Acrobat Analyzer

Define exactly what Adobe Acrobat Analyzer should extract by creating a custom attribute.

Use custom attributes to extract information that is specific to your documents or business processes and not covered by the standard attributes. Custom attributes extract matching text from document content and make the extracted values available for filtering, analysis, and export.

Create a custom attribute

  1. On the Home page, select the Create attributes for analysis tile to open the attribute creation form.

The Home page with the "Create attributes for analysys" tiule highlighted

The page refreshes to display the Attributes page, with the Create custom attribute panel expanded on the right.

  2. Complete the attribute definition:

    • Attribute name - How the attribute appears throughout Acrobat Analyzer. Choose a clear, descriptive name.
    • Attribute type - Select the type of value the attribute should return:
      • Text – Alphanumeric values, phrases, or full text.
      • Number – Numeric values only.
      • Date – Values in a recognizable date format.
    • Attribute mode
      • Strict – Extracts values that closely match the detailed description.
      • Interpretive – Extracts values by inferring meaning across related content.
    • Document type - Select the type of document being analyzed.
      • You can create a new document type by typing into the dropdown field.
    • Attribute group - Select the group where the attribute should live.
      • You can create a new group by typing into the dropdown field. Group names are locked after an attribute is saved.
    • Detailed attribute description - Describe precisely what text should be extracted, using clear, natural language.
      • Minimum length: 30 characters.

  3. (Optional) Configure Advanced options to refine extraction:

    • Positive examples – Values that should be extracted.
    • Negative examples – Similar values that should not be extracted.

Configure Advanced options only when refining an attribute. Avoid adjusting these settings during initial creation unless you’ve identified a specific extraction issue.

  4. Select Evaluate attribute to test the attribute before saving.

  5. When the attribute performs as expected, select Save attribute to finalize it.

Note

You are responsible for creating, testing, and validating custom attributes tailored to your specific documents and use cases. Acrobat Analyzer provides tools for evaluation and feedback, but accuracy depends on your input and refinement.

What happens after saving

  • The attribute begins processing and may take time to become usable.
  • While processing:
    • The attribute cannot be edited.
    • The attribute cannot be used in filters or exports.
  • Once processing completes, extracted values are available across Acrobat Analyzer.

Important considerations

  • Custom attributes extract text based on matching rules, not document structure.
  • Attribute accuracy depends on document consistency and the quality of the description.
  • Refining an attribute may cause previously extracted values to be recalculated.
