Configuration error when starting a CC or CS application

When you launch a Creative Cloud (CC) or Creative Suite (CS) application, do you get a configuration error 15 or 16 that asks you to uninstall or reinstall the product? This error means that permissions to application folders are set incorrectly.

Configuration error

Solution 1: (Windows) Launch the Creative Cloud app with Administrator rights

Complete these steps only once to create licensing files that may be missing.  

  1. Click Start > All Programs.
  2. Right-click the Creative Cloud application and click Run As Administrator.

Solution 2: Restore permissions to licensing folders

Follow the instructions for your operating system to set permissions to the Adobe PCD and SLStore folders.

Mac OS
Windows 10 / Windows 8
Windows Vista/7
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Home

Mac OS

Set permissions for both the SLStore and the Adobe PCD folders.

1. Set permissions for the SLStore folder.

  1. Use the Finder to navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/SLStore.

  2. Control-click the folder and choose Get Info.

  3. Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.

  4. Click the lock icon in the lower-right corner. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted, and then click OK.

  5. Set permissions:

    • System: read/write
    • Admin: read/write
    • Everyone: read/write

  6. Click the gear icon, and select Apply to Enclosed Item.

  7. Close the Get Info dialog box.

2. Set permissions for the Adobe PCD folder.

  1. Use the Finder to navigate to Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PCD.

  2. Control-click the folder and choose Get Info.

  3. Expand the Sharing & Permissions section.

  4. Click the lock icon in the lower-right corner. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted, and then click OK.

  5. Set permissions:

    • System: read/write
    • Admin: read only
    • Everyone: read only

  6. Click the Gear icon, and select Apply to Enclosed Item.

  7. Close the Get Info dialog box.

Windows 10 / Windows 8

To resolve the error in Windows 10 or Windows 8, perform all three steps below.

1. Set folder and search options.

  1. Open a File Explorer window.

  2. Click the View tab, and then click Options.

  3. Deselect Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended) at the bottom of the Advanced Settings section.

  4. Select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

  5. Click OK.

2. Modify the SLStore folder.

  1. In File Explorer, navigate to ProgramData\Adobe\SLStore.

  2. Right-click the SLStore folder and choose Properties.

  3. In the Attributes section, deselect the Read-Only option.

  4. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box.

3. Set permissions.

Perform this procedure two times, once each for the Adobe PCD and the SLStore folders.

Windows 32 bit:  Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe PCD\

Windows 64 bit: Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\ Adobe PCD\

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the Adobe PCD or the SLStore folder, and choose Properties.

  2. Click the Security tab and set permissions:

    Adobe PCD

    • Administrators: Full Control
    • System: Full Control

    SLStore

    • Administrators: Full Control
    • Power Users: Everything but Full Control and Special
    • System: Full Control
    • Users: Read and Special

  3. Click Advanced and, if asked, accept the User Account Control (UAC) elevation prompt.

  4. Click the Owner tab, select Administrators, and click Edit.

  5. Select Replace Owner on Subcontainers and Objects. Click Apply, and then click OK.

  6. Select the Permissions tab and click Change Permissions.

  7. Select Replace all Child Object Permissions with Inheritable Permissions from this Object. Click OK, and then click Yes.

  8. Click OK, and then click OK again in the Windows Security dialog box.

  9. Click OK to close the Advanced Security Settings dialog box.

Windows Vista/7

To resolve the error in Windows Vista/7, perform all three steps below.

1. Set folder and search options.

  1. Choose Start > Computer.

  2. Choose Organize > Folder and Search Options, and click the View tab.

  3. Deselect Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended) at the bottom of the Advanced Settings section.

  5. Click OK.

2. Modify the SLStore folder.

  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to ProgramData\Adobe\SLStore.

  2. Right-click the SLStore folder, and choose Properties.

  3. In the Attributes section, deselect the Read-Only option.

  4. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box.

3. Set permissions.

Perform this procedure two times, once each for the Adobe PCD and the SLStore folders.

Windows XP Professional

To resolve the error in Windows XP Pro, perform all three steps below.

1. Set folder and search options.

  1. Choose Start > Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Folder Options, and click the View tab.

  3. Deselect Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) at the bottom of the Advanced Settings section.

2. Modify the SLStore folder.

  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\SLStore.

  2. Right-click the SLStore folder, and choose Properties.

Windows XP Home

To resolve the error in Windows XP Home, perform all four steps below.

1. Start Windows in Safe Mode.

  1. Restart your computer.

  2. As your computer restarts, but before Windows starts, press and hold F8.

  3. Select Safe Mode from the list of startup options.

  4. "Safe Mode" appears in each corner of the desktop. If it doesn't, then repeat steps 1–3.

  5. Log in to Windows as a user with administrative privileges.

2. Set folder and search options.

  1. Choose Start > Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Folder Options and select the View tab.

  3. Deselect Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended) at the bottom of the Advanced Settings section.

  4. Select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.

  5. Click OK.

3. Modify the SLStore folder.

  1. In Windows Explorer, navigate to Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Adobe\SLStore.

  2. Right-click the SLStore folder and choose Properties.

  3. In the Attributes section, deselect the Read-Only option.

  4. Click Apply, and then click OK to close the Confirm Attribute Changes dialog box.

4. Set permissions.

Perform this procedure two times, once each for the Adobe PCD and the SLStore folders.
