Learn how to place Photoshop or Fresco documents in Illustrator on the iPad.

Illustrator on the iPad saves your creative work as cloud documents so you can open your documents seamlessly across devices. You can also place your cloud documents from Creative Cloud apps like Photoshop and Fresco into your Illustrator documents.

Place Photoshop or Fresco files

You can import or place your files from Photoshop on the iPad, desktop, or Fresco that is saved as a cloud document using a seamless internet connection. If you're unable to find your cloud documents online or face any issues, see Why I can't see my cloud documents online?

To place your files created in Photoshop on the iPad or Fresco directly into Illustrator artboard, do the following:

In the toolbar on the left, tap and select Cloud documents.
A dialog box appears displaying all the cloud documents that you've created using Creative Cloud apps other than Illustrator.
Choose a file and select Link to create a link to the file, or deselect Link to embed the artwork in the Illustrator document.
Tap Place to place a PSD cloud file. It'll take a few moments if your connection is slow or files are large.
Manage linked files or choose from the Import Options to convert layers and edit your artwork.

If you've deselected Link when placing the cloud file, the Import options window displays that allows you to choose how to convert layers.

Manage a linked file

The Links menu helps you link a file within Illustrator on the iPad:

Tap in the toolbar on the right of your workspace.
Choose any of the following options:
- Relink: Restores or replaces a missing link or any linked file with a different source file.
- Update: Updates the linked file to the latest version when the source file is modified. You can change the app preferences to automatically update the linked file.
- Embed: Converts a linked file to layers.

To monitor the status of a linked file check the following badges in the left hand corner of the linked file:

	Indicates a linked cloud file.
	Indicates that the original file has been modified and the linked file needs to be updated.
	Indicates that the linked file is missing and the file needs to be relinked.

Convert layers to objects: Select this option to import Photoshop layers as separate objects in the Illustrator document. This option also makes text editable wherever possible.
Flatten layers to a single image: Select this option to import the document as a single image.
Import hidden layers: Select this check box to import hidden layers. By default, hidden layers are not imported.

Create unique vector designs with imported Photoshop documents

After you import a Photoshop or a Fresco design, you can use the Pen, Pencil, Paint Brush and Blob Brush tools to do vector designing and easily create a blend of scalar and vector graphics. Add colors, gradients, blends, and repeat patterns to give your designs a unique look. When done, you can publish or export your designs in a variety of formats.

Publish and export documents

When you finish editing your Photoshop and Fresco file in Illustrator on the iPad, the file is automatically saved as an Illustrator cloud document and is available in your Home screen.

You can Quick export as PNG file or publish this file in the following formats:

Illustrator (Ai)
Portable Document Format (PDF)
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG)
Portable Network Graphics (PNG)
Photoshop (PSD)

Publish and export options from the iPad

Need to work offline?

If you need to work without an Internet connection, see Prepare to work offline with cloud documents. If all the changes cannot be synced for any reason, you will not lose your work. Illustrator creates a conflict file (backup file) on your device, from which you can recover your changes. Once the file starts syncing on the cloud, the conflict icon is changed to the icon.

All synced Illustrator cloud files and assets in Creative Cloud Libraries consume the cloud storage that you get as part of your Creative Cloud membership.
