Calculate distances and areas on geospatial PDFs

Last updated on Jun 7, 2026

Learn how to calculate distances and areas on geospatial PDFs using measurement tools.

Geospatial PDFs contain embedded coordinate and scale information that lets Acrobat calculate accurate distances, perimeters, and areas based on real‑world geography. Use the Measuring tool to extract precise measurements from maps, site plans, and GIS‑generated documents directly within the PDF.

As you move the pointer over geospatial content, snap markers and cursor coordinates help you align measurements accurately and understand exactly where each measurement begins and ends.

Measure distances and areas

Open a geospatial PDF, then select All tools > Measure objects > Measuring tool .

Select a measurement type from the toolbar: Distance Tool , Perimeter Tool , or Area Tool .

Use Distance Tool to measure between two points, Perimeter Tool to measure around a closed path, or Area Tool to measure a defined region.

Select snap-to options as needed:

  • Snap to Paths
  • Snap to Endpoints
  • Snap to Midpoints
  • Snap to Intersections

Select a starting point on the map to begin the measurement. Acrobat displays the coordinate position and starts the measurement.

Select additional points to define the line or shape. Acrobat updates the distance or area as you add points.

Double-click the final point to complete the measurement and display the result. The measurement appears in the lower-right corner.

Right-click and select Complete Measurement to finish or select Cancel Measurement to discard.

Tip

To change units for the current document, right‑click inside the map with the Measuring tool active and select Distance Unit or Area Unit. To change default units for all geospatial PDFs, select Preferences > Measuring (Geo).
