Merge and flatten layers

Last updated on Jun 7, 2026

Learn how to merge and flatten layers to simplify the structure of PDFs.

Combine layer properties or consolidate visible content to simplify your layered PDF structure. Merging combines selected layers into one layer. Flattening turns all visible layer content into a single, permanent page layer. These tools help prepare files for distribution, printing, or reducing complexity.

Before you begin

You cannot undo merging or flattening layers. Before you combine layers, save a backup copy of your PDF.

Merge selected layers

Select Layers from the right-side panel to open the Layers panel.

Tip

If Layers isn’t visible, select Menu View > Show/Hide > Side panels > Layers.

Select Options in the Layers panel, then select Merge Layers.

Select the layers you want to merge in the Layers to be merged dialog box and then select Add.

Merge Layers dialog box showing lists of available layers, selected layers to merge, and the target layer panel.
Choose the layers to combine and identify the target layer for merging.

Select the target layer in the Target layer to merge into pane where you want the selected layers combined.

Select OK to complete the merge.

The merged layers now share all properties of the target layer. Any content from the source layers is now part of the target layer.

Flatten all layers

Select Layers from the right-side panel to open the Layers panel.

Select Options in the Layers panel, then select Flatten Layers.

Flattening removes all layer structure from your PDF. Only content that was visible when you flattened the document remains in the file. Hidden layer content is permanently discarded.
