Customize geospatial measurements

Last updated on Jun 7, 2026

Learn how to customize measurement units and scale settings for geospatial PDFs in Adobe Acrobat.

Geospatial PDFs use embedded coordinate and scale information to calculate real‑world distances and areas. You can customize measurement units for a specific document or set default units for all geospatial PDFs to ensure measurements match your project or regional standards.

Change measurement units for the current geospatial PDF

Open a geospatial PDF, then select All tools > Measure objects > Measuring tool.

Right-click inside the map area with the Measuring tool active.

Select Distance Unit or Area Unit from the context menu.

Select your preferred measurement type from the list, such as Miles, Kilometers, Square Feet, or Acres.

The unit change applies immediately to new measurements in the current document. These settings reset when you close the PDF.

Set default measurement preferences for all geospatial PDFs

Select Menu > Preferences (Windows) or Acrobat > Preferences (macOS).

Select Measuring (Geo) from the left panel.

Select a unit under Use default distance unit for distance measurements.

Select a unit under Use default area unit for area measurements.

Configure additional display options as needed, such as Display value as (Decimal or Degrees, Minutes, Seconds) and Display direction as (Signed or Named).

Select OK to save your preferences.

Your preference settings now apply as defaults for all geospatial PDFs. You can still override these defaults temporarily using the context menu method for individual documents.

Tip

Select Always display latitude and longitude as WGS 1984 in Preferences to ensure coordinates use the current standard Earth reference frame. Deselect this option only for older maps with different coordinate systems.
