Import shapefiles to geospatial PDFs

Last updated on Jun 7, 2026

Learn how to import a shapefile as a layer into an existing geospatial PDF in Acrobat.

Use Acrobat to overlay vector data from a shapefile on top of a geospatial PDF so you can review additional map features within the same document. Importing the shapefile as a layer preserves its attribute and location information, allowing you to compare, inspect, and measure mapped content in one place.

Before you begin

Ensure the SHP (geometry) and DBF (attribute data) filenames match. Additionally, verify geographic overlap with existing PDF map coordinates.

Import the shapefile as a layer

Select Menu > View > Show/Hide > Side Panels > Layers to open the Layers panel.

In the Layers panel, select the Options menu, then select Import as Layer.

In the Import as Layer dialog, select Browse next to Source file, locate your SHP file, and select it.

Select Settings to open the layer appearance options.

Change line properties to a solid line and set the line color to blue, or adjust other visual properties as needed for your map.

Select OK to apply the settings, then select OK again to import the shapefile.

Acrobat adds the shapefile as a new layer in the geospatial PDF and aligns it with the existing map using the embedded coordinates.

Note

If your shapefile doesn't appear after import, verify that its coordinate system overlaps with the coordinate system of your PDF map. Acrobat requires some geographic overlap to complete the import.
