Reorder PDF layers

Last updated on Jun 7, 2026

Learn how to change the stacking order of layers in a PDF.

Reordering layers controls how content is stacked when layers overlap. Changing the layer order helps you manage which elements appear in front of others and makes complex documents easier to organize.

Open a PDF in Acrobat.

Select Layers from the right-side panel to open the Layers panel.

Tip

If Layers isn’t visible, select Menu View > Show/Hide > Side panels > Layers.

Select the layer you want to move. The selected layer is highlighted in the list.

Drag the layer to its new position in the stacking order.

Release the layer when the blue indicator line appears at the desired location.

Note

Reordering layers changes only their stacking order. It does not modify layer properties, visibility settings, or content.
