Install the Knowledge Base Indexer

Last updated on Aug 20, 2026

Download and open the desktop application used to crawl and index website content.

Install the Knowledge Base Indexer package that matches your computer. After the application opens, you can configure a crawl and run it in Discovery Mode or Upload Mode with Knowledge Base in Acrobat.

Before you begin

  • Make sure the computer has an internet connection.
  • For a Mac, determine whether it uses an Intel processor or Apple Silicon.
  • You need a Knowledge Base account only when using Upload Mode to add indexed content to a collection.

Choose the installation package

Download the appropriate installation package that matches your system:

Locate the downloaded files and extract them when required.

Open the Knowledge Base Indexer application.

Allow the application to run on macOS

Follow the procedure that matches the warning displayed by macOS.

Open the downloaded application.

When macOS displays a message confirming that the application was downloaded from the internet:

  1. Review the warning.
  2. Select Open.

Approve a blocked application

When macOS blocks the application because it cannot verify the developer:

Attempt to open the Knowledge Base Indexer.

Close the warning.

Open System Preferences.

Select Security & Privacy.

  • Navigation labels may vary by macOS version.

Open the General tab.

Locate the message that the application was blocked.

Select Allow Anyway.

Open the application again.

Verify the installation

The installation is complete when the main Knowledge Base Indexer window opens.

Best practices

  • Download only the package intended for your operating system and processor.
  • Extract the downloaded files before opening the application when extraction is required.
  • Test your first crawl in Discovery Mode before uploading content.

Things to know

  • The indexing workflow is the same for all three packages.
  • The macOS packages may require approval through the operating system’s security controls.
  • An internet connection is required.
  • A Knowledge Base account is required for Upload Mode but not for Discovery Mode.
  • Installing and opening the application does not start a crawl or upload content.
