Add custom instructions to a collection

Last updated on Jul 20, 2026

Control how the AI Assistant responds to questions about a collection.

Custom instructions let you define response requirements for a specific collection. The AI Assistant applies these instructions to every question-and-answer interaction that uses the collection.

Use custom instructions to define preferences such as response structure, terminology, tone, level of detail, or required considerations.

Add custom instructions

From the Knowledge Base home page, select the Collections filter.

Select the ellipsis next to the collection name you want to provide instructions for.

Select Custom instruction from the dropdown menu.

Enter the instructions you want the AI Assistant to follow.

Select Save.

Add instructions that define how the AI Assistant should respond to questions about the collection.

Write effective custom instructions

Use clear, direct instructions that describe the result you expect. For example:

  • Summarize the answer before providing supporting details.
  • Use terminology defined in the documents.
  • Present procedures as numbered steps.
  • Identify conflicting information across sources.
  • Include source references for factual claims.
  • Avoid assumptions that the documents do not support.

Keep instructions focused. Long or conflicting requirements can make responses less consistent.

Update or remove custom instructions

Return to the Custom instruction setting to edit the existing instructions.

To stop applying custom instructions, remove the text and save the change.

Things to know

  • Custom instructions apply to all chat interactions within the collection.

  • Responses remain limited to the information available from the selected collection and applicable AI Assistant capabilities.
  • Users who can modify the collection may also be able to change its custom instructions.
  • Updated instructions apply to new interactions and do not revise previously generated responses.
