Gradient interpolation in Photoshop

Use the upgraded Gradient tool in Photoshop for enhanced contextual gradient editing.

Adobe has upgraded the Gradient tool in Photoshop by introducing two new options to make gradients more accurate, easier to create and modify, and touch-friendly for its users.

New gradient interpolation options

Linear and Perceptual are two new gradient interpolation methods - along with Classic - the existing interpolation method, designed to enhance the user's creative process of creating smoother gradients.

Let's learn more about these three methods.

Classic interpolation

Classic interpolation in Photoshop

About: This is the traditional method that uses the cubic interpolation of colors.

Usage: Use this gradient option to work on designs that include gradients created in older versions of Photoshop, as this option helps you retain the same look and feel.

Perceptual interpolation

Perceptual interpolation in Photoshop

About: This method interpolates the gradient in the OKLab color space.

Usage: Use this option to create natural-looking gradients, like the way natural gradients in the real world are perceived by the human eye.

Linear interpolation

About: This method interpolates the gradient in the linear color space.

Usage: Similar to Perceptual, this option also closely approximates the way the human eye perceives light in the natural world.

What else do I need to know?

Perceptual is the default selection but you can change this easily to the two other presets.

Any gradients that you draw with the Gradient tool, fills, overlay effects, and maps, and Shapes fill and stroke support these new interpolation options.

Quick tips to remember...

  • Redraw gradient presets with Classic, Linear, and Perceptual interpolation methods using the Gradient tool.
  • Create actions that draw gradients and include the interpolation methods.
  • Convert documents using the new gradient interpolation options to a list of color modes and color profiles.
  • Use interpolation options on gradient masks.
  • Remember backward compatibility - Documents with gradients created with Perceptual and Linear will render and default to Classic.
