Learn how to use sliders, a color ramp, or eyedropper sampling to select foreground and background colors directly in Adobe Photoshop on desktop.
The Color panel gives you direct control over foreground and background colors without opening additional dialogs.
The Color panel provides color selection through adjustable sliders, direct value entry, eyedropper sampling, and a color ramp. Use this panel for quick color adjustments when you know specific color values or want to sample colors from your image. For organized color libraries and saved swatches, use the Swatches panel instead.
Open the Color panel by selecting Window > Color. The panel displays foreground and background color boxes at the top, with color sliders below that adjust values based on your selected color model. A color ramp at the bottom enables quick color selection. The active color box appears outlined in black.
Alert indicators appear above the color ramp. An exclamation mark in a triangle warns that the selected color cannot be printed using CMYK inks (out-of-gamut) and may shift when converted to CMYK for printing. A square icon indicates the color is not web-safe and may dither inconsistently across different browsers or displays.
Change the color model
Different workflows require different color models. RGB works well for screen-based designs, while CMYK is better suited to print projects.
Select RGB Sliders, CMYK Sliders, HSB Sliders, Lab Sliders, or Web Color Sliders.
The sliders update immediately to reflect your chosen color model.
Tip
By default, slider colors change dynamically as you drag them. To disable this feature, select Edit > Preferences > General and deselect Dynamic Color Sliders.
Customize the color ramp spectrum
Open the Color panel menu.
Select RGB Spectrum, CMYK Spectrum, Grayscale Ramp, Current Colors, or Make Ramp Web Safe.
Current Colors displays a gradient between your current foreground and background colors to help you select intermediate values. Make Ramp Web Safe limits choices to the 216 web-safe colors for consistent display across browsers. Shift-click the color ramp to quickly cycle through different spectrum displays.

In the Color panel, select the foreground or background color box to activate it.
Drag the color sliders to adjust values or enter specific numeric values in the text fields next to each slider.
The color preview updates in real time as you adjust values.

Position your pointer over the color ramp; it changes to an eyedropper.
Select a color from the ramp to apply it to the active color box.
Note
Press Alt + click (Windows) or Option + click (macOS) the color ramp to apply the color to the inactive color box.
Select colors using Color Picker
In the Color panel, select the color selection box at the top (not the foreground/background squares).
In the Color Picker dialog that opens, choose your desired color using any available method.
Select OK to apply the color.
Note
The Color Picker provides access to more advanced color selection options, including spot color libraries and precise numeric input across multiple color models.
