Learn how to use AI-powered masking to add or modify content within images directly in Figma.

You can use the Generative Fill Feature in the Firefly plugin to add, replace, or modify specific areas of an image. Use simple text prompts to work with images directly in your Figma workspace.

Before you begin, make sure you have:

  • Figma desktop app or Figma in the browser
  • Adobe GenStudio plugin installed in Figma
  • Adobe account with Firefly access

Create a masked area and generate content

In the Firefly plugin, select the Generative Fill option.

Select an image by:

  • Selecting one on your Figma canvas.
  • Selecting Upload image to add from your device.
  • Selecting Browse AEM assets to access Adobe Experience Manager files.
Firefly panel in Figma displays the Generative fill workflow with a toolbar at the top and a prompt box at the bottom.
You can select the Reset button on the top-right of the canvas to clear your mask and start over.

Select the brush tool and paint over the area you want to modify. Use the Brush settings dropdown to adjust brush size as needed.

Tip

Select the Select background icon to isolate your subject before applying generative fill. Selecting the background will disable the brush tool.

Enter a text prompt describing what you want to generate in the masked area.

Select the generate icon to create variations based on your prompt.

The generated image will appear in the plugin panel. You can add it to your canvas using any of these methods:

  • Drag and drop an image directly onto the canvas.
  • Select a frame on the canvas, then select an image in the plugin window to insert it into that frame.
  • Select the upload icon to place an image on the canvas.
  • Select the three dots icon and then select Download all to Figma.

After generating images, you can take the following additional actions by selecting the three dots icon to copy your prompt for reuse or select the pencil icon to access additional generative actions, like Generate Similar, for creating variations of a single result.
