Generate Sound effects

Last updated on Mar 17, 2026

Learn how to use text prompts and voice timing to generate custom audio for video projects.

Add custom audio to your video projects by generating sound effects directly in Firefly video editor (beta). You can describe the sound you want, control its duration, and optionally record your voice to set the timing and intensity.

Generate Sound effects is available in Firefly video editor (beta) and requires microphone access if you want to use voice recording to time the audio generation. The generated audio variations appear in the Generate media panel and can be added to a timeline to be edited like any other audio clip.

Generate sound from text prompts and voice recording

On the Firefly homepage, select Create from the left panel, and then select Edit video (beta).

Open an existing project or create a new one to add media file to the timeline.

Select the Generate media icon from the right panel next to the video preview panel, and then select Sound effects.

In the prompt box, describe the sound you want to generate, such as "Gentle waves lapping on the shore" or "Rain falling on a window."

Note

Currently, the Sound effects feature only supports English prompts.

Move the Duration slider to your desired time to adjust the length of the generated audio or select the reset icon to return to the default duration.

The selected duration appears in the box next to the slider and determines the maximum length of your generated audio clip.

If you wish to guide the generated audio or set the time duration with your voice, go to the Voice timing section and select the Record button.

  • To precisely control when your audio begins, place the playhead at the exact frame where you want the sound to start. The video editor will play the timeline without sound to help you better match your voice to the timing.
  • If prompted, allow Firefly video editor (beta) to access your device's microphone.
  • Speak or make sound to guide your generated audio.
The Voice timing section in the right panel shows a red button with a countdown timer and a recording indicator.
When the recording starts, the Record button turns red and begins a countdown from 3.

Select Generate to generate the audio with or without voice timing.
Currently, each generation produces 4 variations, each up to 30 seconds long.

Generated variations appear under the Variations section. Select the play icon to play the sound with the video, and the add icon to add them to your timeline.

The Variations section in the right panel shows four audio variations with play, check, and add icons.
The audio variant added to your timeline appears with a check icon.

You can easily switch between the variations from the same generation set by selecting the add icon This will import the clip to the Your media panel and replace the audio on your timeline.

Note

If a new variation set is generated or the prompt or duration settings are changed, the audio clips created will be added as new media to the timeline.

Once a variation is added to the timeline, you can edit it like any other audio clip.
