Automatically split scenes in videos

Last updated on Jun 1, 2026

Learn to use scene detection to automatically divide video clips when scene changes.

Split scenes automatically detects shot and scene changes, eliminating the need to manually scrub through long videos and split scenes one by one. This feature analyzes your footage and automatically identifies cut points where camera angles, shots, or scenes change, then splits the clip into separate segments at those points.

Available in the Firefly video editor (beta), Split scene applies to video clips already added to your timeline.

Split your video into scenes

Select the video clip in the timeline that you want to split into scenes.

Right-click the selected clip.

Select Split scenes from the context menu.

Context menu displys a highlighted Split scenes option for automatically splitting a video clip into scenes.
Use the Split scenes to automatically split any video clip.

Wait while Firefly video editor (beta) detects scene changes and automatically splits the clip.

Once processing completes, your original clip appears as multiple clips in the timeline, divided at each detected cut point. You can now edit, rearrange, trim, or apply effects to each scene independently.

Tip

Scene detection works best on videos with clear visual changes between shots. For subtle transitions or gradual camera movements, you may need to manually split additional segments using the standard split tool.
