Remix audio in Premiere

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn to use AI-powered analysis to automatically adjust music duration by finding optimal cut points and creating seamless transitions in Adobe Premiere.

Fitting background music to your video length often requires tedious manual cutting, repositioning clips, and adding crossfades. The Remix feature in Premiere uses Adobe Sensei to automatically retime music tracks, saving hours of editing work.

Remix analyzes the musical structure of your audio clip by measuring qualities of each beat and comparing them across the entire song. The tool then identifies the optimal cut points and loops to create a musically coherent version at your target duration, complete with automatic crossfades. This works with music from Adobe Stock, personal libraries, or any audio source.

The Remix tool preserves the beginning and end of your original clip while intelligently rearranging the middle section. Depending on the original tempo and composition, Remix typically achieves results within one second of your target duration.

Apply Remix to adjust music duration

Select the music clip in your timeline that you want to adjust.

In the Toolbar panel, select and hold the Ripple Edit tool group, then select Remix Tool.

Drag the right edge of your music clip to your desired duration.

In the Essential Sound panel under Duration, enter your target duration or adjust the Segments and Variations sliders to refine the result.

Use the Duration controls in the Essential Sound panel to remix audio and match a target duration.

After applying Remix, vertical zigzag lines appear on your audio clip showing where edits were made. Move the playhead slightly before these indicators and press Play to hear the transitions in real time. You can also double-click the clip to open it in the Source Monitor and play in isolation.

Customize Remix parameters

  • The Essential Sound panel offers three parameters to fine-tune your remix:
  • Target Duration: Enter the exact length of your video. Remix finds a musically coherent version typically within one second of this duration.
  • Segments: Control the number of cuts and crossfades. Lower values result in fewer cuts, while higher values give the algorithm greater flexibility to adapt to songs with dynamic structures.
  • Variations: Preview alternative arrangements focusing on either melodic elements (best for tracks with prominent solo instruments or vocals) or harmonic elements (ideal for orchestral or choral pieces).
Note

If you use Remix on a preview version of Adobe Stock music and then purchase the full track, verify the timing with the purchased version. Reapply Remix to the full-length song if necessary due to slight timing differences.

Work with specific song sections

If you need a specific part of your song to align with a particular moment in your video, split the original clip at that exact point before remixing. Apply Remix to both segments separately, then position them to create a seamless transition that aligns perfectly with your video.

Tip

Remix doesn't analyze vocal lyrics, so it may combine lines from different verses. Preview your remixed music carefully when working with vocal tracks to ensure lyrical continuity makes sense for your project.
