Designate a track effect as pre-fade or post-fade

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to control when audio effects are applied in relation to a track’s volume fader in Adobe Premiere for better mixing results.

In Premiere, you can choose whether an audio effect is applied before or after the track’s volume fader. This choice affects how the effect responds to volume changes.

By default, effects are pre-fader, but you can adjust this based on your mixing needs.

Select Window > Audio Track Mixer.

Select the Show/Hide Effects and Sends icon (top-left corner) to view the Effects and Sends panel.

Find the effect in the track’s effects rack.

Right-click (Windows) or control-click (macOS) on the effect name.

Select Pre-Fader or Post-Fader.

Pre-fader and post-fader settings determine when in the signal flow an effect is applied.

Setting

Description

Pre-Fader

Sends the signal before the volume fader. Moving the fader doesn’t affect the signal sent to the effect or auxiliary send.

Post-Fader

Sends the signal after the volume fader. Volume adjustments affect the signal level sent to the effect or auxiliary send.
