Freeze a video frame for the duration of a clip

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to apply Frame Hold settings to display a single frame throughout your clip's entire duration in Adobe Premiere.

This technique converts an entire video clip into a static frame, similar to importing a still image. The clip displays only one frozen frame from its In point, Out point, or a marker you specify. For freezing only a portion of a clip while the rest plays normally, use Time Remapping instead.

Frame Hold preserves the clip's original duration in the Timeline while displaying a single static frame. You can freeze any frame in the clip, making this useful for creating pause effects, extending moments, or working with footage that requires only a single frame.

Apply Frame Hold to a clip

Select a clip in the Timeline panel.

To freeze a frame other than the In or Out point, open the clip in the Source Monitor and press M to set Marker 0 at your desired frame.

Select Clip > Video Options > Frame Hold Options.

In the dialog box, select Hold On and choose which frame to freeze from the menu, In Point, Out Point, Marker 0, or a specific timecode.

Frame Hold Options dialog showing Hold On set to Source Timecode, with a frame timecode value and Hold Filters option.
Set frame hold options to freeze the clip on a specific source timecode.

Select OK.

The clip now displays your selected frame for its entire duration. If you set the hold frame on an In or Out point, changing that edit point won't change which frame is frozen. If you used Marker 0, moving the marker will update the displayed frame.

Tip

For freezing only part of a clip's duration, use the Time Remapping technique with speed keyframes instead of Frame Hold.
