Find and edit source clips

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to locate the source of a clip in Adobe Premiere within a Production and reassociate it when the original project isn’t immediately found.

Right-click the clip in the timeline and select Reveal In Project to find its source.

Premiere opens the source project automatically and scans other open projects if the clip cannot be found immediately.

Double-click the source clip in the Project panel to open it in the Source Monitor.

Select Window > Effect Controls to open the Effect Controls panel.

Apply, change, or remove source clip effects in the Effect Controls panel once the source clip’s project is open in read-write mode.

If you select a clip in a sequence, the Source tab shows source clip effects but does not allow editing. The Program Monitor still displays their visual results, and Global FX Mute bypasses them in the timeline. Right-click the clip and select Reveal In Project to open the source clip so you can add, modify, or remove these effects.

Reassociate missing source clips

Select Edit > Reassociate Source Clips to reconnect the source clip when it remains missing.

Navigate to and select the project file that contains the missing source clip.

Premiere scans the selected project and reconnects matching clips.
