Pan or balance an adaptive track

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to use the Track Output Channel Assignments button to map audio channels in multichannel sequences in Adobe Premiere.

This procedure applies when working with sequences containing an adaptive or multichannel master audio track. When you need to control how individual track channels route to specific master track channels, use the Direct Output Assignment feature. The Track Assignment dialog box provides a matrix view for precise channel mapping.

By default, Premiere automatically assigns track channels to master track channels based on the number of channels in each new track. For multichannel masters, the application assigns channels to channel 1, 1-2, or 1-6 depending on whether the new track is mono, stereo, or 5.1. You can customize these assignments to create specific routing configurations for your audio mix.

Configure track output channel assignments

Select Window > Audio Track Mixer.

In the Audio Track Mixer, locate the Direct Output Assignment button next to the track you want to configure. The labels next to this button show the current master track channel assignments.

Select the Direct Output Assignment button, or right-click the track header and select Track Output Assignment.

In the Track Assignment dialog box, select one of the channels in the Master track as the destination for that channel by marking your mapping on the matrix.

Select OK to apply the channel assignments.

Note

You cannot assign track sends to the Master track in a multichannel sequence.

The labels next to the Direct Output Assignment button update to reflect your new channel mappings, allowing quick inspection of your routing configuration without opening the dialog box.
