Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn how to set In and Out points in the Source Monitor and use it to preview and select individual clips or segments from your media files before adding them to your timeline.

When you import a video or audio file, you can use the Source Monitor to preview it and select the portions you want to use in your sequence. You can also use it to add markers, set clip In  and Out  points, and adjust various settings such as the playback speed, volume, and video and audio effects.

To open a clip in Source Monitor, double-click the clip in the Project or Timeline panel.

You can import more than one clip in Source Monitor. However, you can view only one clip at a time. Select the three stacked lines   next to the sequence name to view recently imported clips and choose a clip from the drop-down list.

To mark an In point, drag the playhead to the frame you want. Then select the Mark In   button or press the I key.

To mark an Out point, drag the playhead to the frame you want. Then select the Mark Out  button, or press the O key.

After you mark In and Out  points, you can always adjust them before you edit the clip into the sequence by dragging them to new positions in the time ruler. You can also drag the playhead to a new frame and use the Mark In or Mark Out buttons to set new In or Out points.

To move In and Out point together, hover over the In or Out Grip tool at the center of the area between your set In and Out points until the cursor turns into a hand.
