Global mute in Premiere (beta)

Last updated on Mar 13, 2026

Learn how to mute all audio in your sequence at once in Adobe Premiere (beta).

Global mute lets you quickly silence all audio playback in a sequence without changing clip-level or track-level audio settings. This is useful when you want to focus on visual edits, review timing, or temporarily disable sound during playback. The mute state isn't saved with the project and resets when you close and relaunch Premiere.

Create or open a sequence in Premiere (beta).

In the Premiere (beta) menu bar, locate the Audio   button.

Select the audio button to mute all audio in the sequence. The audio icon changes to the mute   icon state. The audio meters across the application also turn gray to indicate muted playback.

The Audio mute button is highlighted in the menu bar as well as in the Source and Program Monitors.
Use the audio button in the menu bar to mute audio playback in the Source Monitor as well as the Program Monitor.

Select the button again to unmute audio and restore playback sound.

Note

You can also right-click the audio meters to access mute options for all audio, the Source Monitor, or the Program Monitor

For additional mute options, hold the audio button and select one of the following:

  • Mute All Audio: Mutes all audio playback.
  • Mute Source Monitor: Mutes audio playback in the Source Monitor only.
  • Mute Program Monitor: Mutes audio playback in the Program Monitor only.
Mute button in the heading bar showing mute options: Mute All Audio, Mute Source Monitor, and Mute Program Monitor.
Select a mute option to control audio playback for all audio, the Source Monitor, or the Program Monitor.
