Make a dynamically linked composition offline

Last updated on Apr 2, 2026

Learn to make a dynamically linked composition offline and manage its connection in Adobe Premiere.

Premiere displays dynamically linked compositions offline in any of the following situations:

  • You renamed, moved, or deleted the After Effects project that contains the composition.
  • You purposely took the composition offline.
  • You are working on a project that has been trimmed by the Premiere Project Manager. The Project Manager does not move the After Effects source compositions to the trimmed project folder, so you must move the composition manually.

Offline compositions are identified by an offline icon in the Premiere Project panel. If you are managing an offline composition, you may relink it to the original After Effects composition or opt to connect it to an alternate source composition.

If you are experiencing jerky playback, you can take a dynamically linked composition offline. When you do this, you disconnect the dynamic link with After Effects, and Premiere replaces the linked composition in the Project panel with an offline version.

Temporarily suppress a linked clip in Adobe Premiere by selecting the clip and selecting Clip > Enable. To restore the clip, select Clip > Enable again. A check mark next to the command indicates that the clip is enabled.

Select the dynamically linked composition in the Project panel.

Right-click and select Make Offline.
