What are Motion Graphics templates created in After Effects?
Motion Graphics templates are created by a motion graphics specialist in After Effects using the Essential Graphics panel.
To retain stylistic control of compositions, artists package an After Effects composition as a Motion Graphics template. This allows Premiere Pro editors to change variables such as text, color, size, layout, or mood of the motion graphic using their own Essential Graphics panel without changing the overall aesthetic.
Motion Graphics templates allow you to be more collaborative with your post-production team and are exchanged easily between teammates via Creative Cloud Libraries.
If I only have Premiere Pro installed, do I have to have After Effects installed to use a Motion Graphics template created in After Effects?
Yes. If you don't have After Effects installed, you'll see an error message saying:
"This Motion Graphic template was created in After Effects. To use this template in Premiere Pro, please install After Effects (trial or license) and retry. Learn more at adobe.com/go/mgt."
To use Motion Graphics templates created in After Effects, you need a trial or licensed version of After Effects installed on your computer.
- If you are a Creative Cloud subscriber, you already have a license of After Effects. Download it from your Creative Cloud application.
- If you have a Single-App license of Premiere Pro, a paid license of After Effects is not required. Install the trial version or the render-only/non-royalty-bearing version of After Effects (see the second question in the Installation section below).
After your trial has expired, your After Effects Motion Graphics template still works when you convert it to a paid version or render-only/non-royalty-bearing version.
How do I install After Effects?
Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects.html to install After Effects.
If you have the Creative Cloud (CC) desktop application installed already, you would be able to install After Effects directly from the application. If you do not have Creative Cloud (CC) desktop application installed already, the Creative Cloud installer gets installed on your desktop first and you can use it to install After Effects.
My trial version of After Effects has expired. Can I still continue to render Motion Graphics templates?
I have Premiere Pro installed on my computer, but I don't see the Creative Cloud desktop application. Where I can install After Effects?
If I have received a Premiere Pro project from an editor that contains a Motion Graphics template created in After Effects, what do I do?
If you only have an installation of Premiere Pro and not After Effects on your computer, when you try to open the Premiere Pro project containing a Motion Graphics template created in After Effects, you see a notice that says that the media file is 'Offline'. To work with this project, you need to install an After Effects license (trial or licensed version). See the note above on how to do this.
Can I use Motion Graphics templates if I have the latest version of Premiere Pro (2017.1) installed on my computer but use an older version of After Effects?
No. If you are using the latest version of Premiere Pro but have an older version of After Effects installed on your computer, you cannot use Motion Graphics templates, and the media file shows as 'Offline'. To use the feature, install the latest version of After Effects (trial/licensed version) using the instructions above.
Can I create Motion Graphics templates in Premiere Pro without installing After Effects?
Yes, you can create Motion Graphics templates without installing After Effects using the Essential Graphics panel. Templates created using Premiere Pro render natively without installing After Effects. After Effects is required along with Premiere Pro only for rendering Motion Graphics templates that were created using After Effects.
