Learn how to use generative expand to resize images within the Edit tab.

Resize your images effortlessly with Expand. Use generative AI to intelligently expand your image beyond its original frame while maintaining visual consistency and preserving the overall look and feel of your composition.

On the Firefly homepage, go to the Image module in the left pane and select Expand background or generate an image, and go to the Edit tab and select Expand

If needed, upload an image.

Select the new dimension from the following options:

  • Freeform
  • (1:1)
  • (4:3)
  • (16:9)
  • (3:4)
The Generative expand screen displays an image with cropping handles and the Landscape option selected out of a variety of aspect ratios.
Select the More menu to view additional aspect ratios for expanding the image.

Tip

Use the Freeform option to drag the handles and extend the boundary of the image. Use the preset options to limit the extension to a specific aspect ratio.

In the prompt field, enter a description of what you want the extended area to be filled with, or leave it blank to let Firefly analyze the image and extend it with suitable elements.

Select the Reset     icon at any time to clear all extended boundaries and start again.

Once you're satisfied with your frame size, select Expand to initiate the generation and extend the image.

Note

Credit consumption varies by model. To see how many generative credits each generation will use, hover the credit consumption indicator next to the Expand button.
