Issue

When you try to install Adobe Reader, the installer returns the following error message:

"Internal error 2753 Updater.api_NON_OPT" or a version of this error message, and then quits.

You sometimes also see the error message during the process of removing a previous version of Adobe Reader.

Solutions

Solution 1: Remove all previous versions of Acrobat and Adobe Reader using Add/Remove programs.

  1. From the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove programs.
  2. Select the most recent version of Acrobat or Adobe Reader in the list and click Remove.
  3. When prompted, confirm that you want to remove the application.
  4. Repeat these steps until there are no more Acrobat or Reader entries in the list.
  5. Restart the computer. 

If the Add/Remove Programs control panel does not let you remove the application, try to repair the Reader installation by reinstalling the same Reader version first.

Solution 2: Remove the Acrobat or Reader Windows Installer registry keys.

Important: Verify that the correct registry key is selected. When viewing a path of HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Features\68AB67CA330100007706000000000030, make sure that only the 68AB67CA330100007706000000000030 is selected. If the name does not match exactly, do not select the item.

  1. Choose Start > Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.
  3. In the Registry Editor, select the appropriate Acrobat registry key

    • For Reader 8.0.0, remove:
      • 32-bit Windows

  4. Click Edit > Delete.
  5. Select Yes when prompted to confirm the deletion.
  6. Repeat steps 3-5 on the remaining registry keys and any listed updates that have been applied.
  7. Exit the Registry Editor.

Additional Information

The 2753 error can appear when a (previous) installation of Adobe Reader has become corrupt. It also occurs when Adobe Reader-related entries in the registry become corrupt, prompting the installation to get interrupted.
