Change and manage blending modes

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to isolate and apply blending modes to control how overlapping colors and objects interact.

Blending modes define how overlapping colors blend. Use them to create effects like Multiply, Screen, or Overlay, adding depth, contrast, and texture to your artwork.

For example, if you want to darken an object in your artwork without hiding what’s behind it, you can use the Multiply blending mode to layer shadows or darker shapes.

Select an object or group in the Layers panel.

Select Window > Transparency.

Select a blending mode from the Blending Mode drop-down menu in the Transparency panel.

Tip

To change the blending mode of a fill or stroke, select the artwork, and then select the Fill or Stroke in the Appearance panel.

Select the target icon next to the layer or group in the Layers panel. Then, in the Transparency panel, select Isolate Blending.

The Blending Mode drop-down menu in Transparency panel is open, highlighting the Color Dodge mode along with various other blending options such as Normal, Darken, Multiply, Color Burn, etc.
Enhance the brightness and contrast of your artwork by applying the Color Dodge blending mode to the object's fill in the Appearance panel

To select all objects using the same blending mode:

Deselect all objects.

In the Transparency panel, choose the desired blending mode.

Go to Select > Same > Blending Mode to highlight matching objects.
