Insert stops in actions

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to add stops in the Actions panel to pause playback and display instructions during an action.

You can add stops in an action to pause at a specific step for manual completion of tasks that can’t be recorded automatically, like using a painting tool or making a brush stroke. You can also include a short message with a stop as a reminder of what to do before resuming the action.

Select Window > Actions.

In the Actions panel, select the action name or an existing command where you want to insert a stop.

From the Actions panel menu icon, select Insert Stop.

Tip

You can insert a stop when recording an action or after it has been recorded.

In the Record Stop dialog box, add a Message in the text box, and then select OK.

The Record Stop dialog box displays a text box for adding a message and a checkbox for Allow Continue to let the action proceed without stopping.
Add a custom message in the Record Stop dialog box to control pauses in your action.

To continue running the action without pausing at the stop, select Allow Continue.

Select the Play Current Selection in the Actions panel to complete the action.
