Convert anchor points on a path

Last updated on Sep 11, 2025

Learn how to convert anchor points between smooth or corner points to refine curves and adjust the shape of your paths with precision.

In Adobe Illustrator, anchor points, which define the shape of paths, can be smooth or corner points. Smooth points create curved segments, while corner points create sharp angles.

Select the object or path using the Direct Selection tool to view the anchor points.

Select the Anchor Point tool or press Shift + C.

To convert a corner point to a smooth point, drag the anchor point slightly in any direction to view its direction handles, and then drag the direction handles to adjust the curve.

To convert a smooth point to a corner point without direction lines, select the smooth point.

To convert a smooth point to a corner point with independent direction handles, drag either of the direction handles separately.
