Make colors printable or web safe

Learn how to make colors printable or web-safe in Adobe Illustrator to ensure they display or print correctly.

Shift an out-of-gamut color to a printable color

Some colors in the RGB and HSB color models, such as neon colors, can’t be printed because they don’t have equivalents in the CMYK model. If you select an out-of-gamut color, an alert triangle  appears in the Color panel or Color Picker.

Select Window > Color..

Select individual colors in your artwork and check if they are out of gamut.

Select Out of Gamut Warning to shift to the closest CMYK equivalent, displayed in a small box by the triangle.
The Out-of-Gamut warning symbol is highlighted in the Color panel.
Select Out of Gamut Warning icon to convert the colors to printable colors.

Shift a color to a web-safe color

Web-safe colors are the 216 colors used by all browsers, regardless of the platform. If you select a color that isn’t web-safe, an alert cube  appears in the Color panel, Color Picker, Edit Colors, or Recolor Artwork dialog box.

Select Window > Color.

Select individual colors in your artwork and check if they are web safe.

Select Out of Web Color Warning to shift to the closest web-safe color, displayed in a small box by the cube.

Display web-safe colors

Web-safe colors are those colors used by all web browsers, regardless of the platform.

Select the artwork.

Select Window > Color.

Double-click the Fill box in the Color panel to open the Color Picker dialog box.

Select Only Web Colors.
