Create files on large canvases

Learn how to create large canvas files in Illustrator to design large-scale artwork.

Adobe Illustrator lets you create large artwork on a spacious 100x canvas, measuring 2270 x 2270 inches. This large workspace allows you to create large-scale artwork while keeping the details clear.

Use a large canvas when your artwork exceeds the default canvas size, like billboards, posters, or high-resolution exports.

Select File New. The New Document dialog box opens.

In the New Document dialog box, enter a width or height greater than 227 inches. For example, enter 500 inches for Width and 500 inches for Height to create a large canvas for these dimensions.

Create a new document dialog box in Adobe Illustrator with 500 inches height and width showing a warning sign as the size is more than the default size of 227 inches.
Set up a large canvas by entering dimensions beyond the default size. Illustrator displays a warning sign.

Note

Illustrator creates a large canvas automatically if any artboard is larger than 227 inches or if there are too many artboards to fit within the default canvas.

Customize other settings, such as units, color mode, and artboards, then select Create. Illustrator automatically generates your new large canvas document.

Save or export your documents with large-scale artwork. Illustrator currently supports only PDF, PNG, JPEG, PS, TIFF, and SVG formats to export large documents.

Note

Large canvas files have zoom limits between 0.313% and 6,400% and may not support some features like Slices and Save for Web.
