Layers panel overview

Learn about the Layers panel that allows you to organize, manage, and control all objects in your Illustrator artwork efficiently.

You can open the Layers panel using the Window > Layers menu. The color displayed in each layer lets you quickly locate an object’s corresponding layer in the Layers panel and change the layer color to suit your needs.

Options

Functions

Search All field

Allows you to search for specific layers, sublayers, or objects by name.

Filter

Filters visible items by layers and object type such as text, images, paths.

Save Selection

Saves the current selection as a named group, making it easy to reselect later

Collect For Export 

Gathers selected objects or layers for quick export via the Asset Export panel.

Locate Object 

Highlights the selected object in the Layers panel.

Make/Release Clipping Mask 

  • Uses the topmost selected object to mask the objects below it.
  • Removes the mask and reveals the original objects.

Create New Layer

Creates a parent layer on top of the selected layer.

Create New Sublayer

Creates a nested layer inside the selected layer.

Delete Selection

Removes selected layers or objects.

Layers panel menu

Helps you organize, customize, and manage artwork layers. You can duplicate, merge, or group layers, adjust print setting, flatten artwork, and customize panel display.
