Set graphic appearance styles

Apply a graphic style to reuse appearance settings like strokes, fills, effects, and transparency across your artwork.

You can apply graphic styles from the Graphic Styles panel or import them from another document. Styles can be created, updated, or merged using appearance attributes.

Work with graphic styles

Select Window > Graphic Styles.

In the Graphic Styles panel menu , do the following:

  • To create a new graphic style, select New Graphic Style .
  • To delete a graphic style, select the style, and then select Delete Graphic Style .
  • To break the link to a graphic style, select the object, and then select Break Link to Graphic Style .
  • To import all graphic styles from another document, select Graphic Styles Libraries Menu , select Other Library, select the file to import, and then select Open.
  • To replace a graphic style’s appearance, select Window > Appearance, select the style to replace from the Graphic Styles panel, select artwork with desired attributes, and then select Redefine Graphic Style from the Appearance panel menu .
Note

The replaced style keeps its name but updates its appearance, affecting all instances in the document.

  • To create a graphic style based on two or more existing styles, select Merge Graphic Styles.
  • To duplicate a graphic style, select Duplicate Graphic Style.
  • To rename a graphic style, select Graphic Style Options, enter the new name in the Style Name text box, and then select OK.
Tip

The imported graphic styles appear in a separate library panel.

Apply Graphic Styles

Select the object, group, or layer, then click a style thumbnail in the Graphic Styles panel.

The Graphic Styles panel displays available styles along with options to select a style library from the Graphic Styles Libraries Menu, Break Link to Graphic Style, add New Graphic Style, and Delete Graphic Style.
Choose a style thumbnail in the Graphic Styles panel to apply its appearance to an object.

Do the following:

  • To apply a style to an object, select one of the available styles in the Graphic Styles panel.
  • To apply a style to multiple objects, select all objects and select a style.
  • To apply a style to a group or layer, select the group or layer from the Layers panel, and apply a style.
  • To merge a style with an object’s existing style attributes, or apply multiple styles to an object, select the object and Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (macOS) the desired style in the Graphic Styles panel.
Tip

To preserve the color of type when applying a graphic style, deselect Override Character Color in the Graphic Styles panel menu.
