Assign different scales to value axes

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to create graphs with different scales for each value axis, allowing you to display data with varying ranges in a single graph.

If your graph includes value axes on both sides, you can assign different data series to each axis. Illustrator automatically scales them separately, which is useful when combining multiple graph types in one chart.

Select a graph tool from the Tools panel by holding down the Graph Tool to view all available graph types.

Drag to draw the graph on the artboard and set its size.

In the Graph Data window, enter your data so that each column represents a different dataset.

Select Apply or press Enter to generate the graph.

Select the entire graph with the Selection tool.

Select Object > Graph > Type to open the Graph Type dialog box and select the appropriate graph type.

Under Value Axis, select Separate Scales to assign different scales to each value axis.

The Graph Type dialog box displays the highlighted Value Axis dropdown menu along with other options.

Adjust other graph settings as needed, then select OK.
