Show or hide direction lines for anchor points

Last updated on Sep 11, 2025

Learn how to use the Direct Selection tool to show or hide direction handles for multiple anchor points.

When working with anchor points and paths, direction lines or handles can help refine curve shapes. However, having too many visible handles can be distracting. Illustrator lets you control the visibility of direction lines for selected anchor points.

Select the Direct Selection tool, and then Shift-click to select the anchor points you want to show or hide.

Select Window > Control to view the Control panel.

In the Control panel at the top of the screen, select one of the following options:

  • Show handles for multiple selected anchor points
  • Hide handles for multiple selected anchor points
Note

Unlike corner points, when you select a smooth point, the direction handles appear automatically. To convert a corner point to a smooth point, select Convert selected anchor points to smooth in the Control panel.
