Set layer and sublayer options

Learn how to adjust layer and sublayer options in Illustrator to organize artwork, control visibility, and adjust print settings for efficient editing.

Use the Layers panel to modify artwork in a few simple steps.

Select Window > Layers to open the Layers panel.

In the Layers panel, select the layer or sublayer, and then select Options for “<Layer name>” from the Layers panel menu .

Tip

You can also double-click the layer’s thumbnail to open the Layer Options dialog box.

In the Layer Options dialog box, specify the following:

  • Name: Lets you edit the name of the layer or sublayer as it appears in the Layers panel.
  • Color: lets you edit the layer’s color setting using the dropdown menu or the color swatch.
  • Template: Makes the layer a template layer.
  • Lock: Prevents changes to the object.
  • Show: Displays all artwork in the layer on the artboard.
  • Print: Makes the artwork in the layer printable.
  • Preview: Displays the artwork in the layer in color instead of outlines.
  • Dim Images to: Reduces the intensity of linked images and bitmap images in the layer to the specified percentage.

Use the Layer Options dialog box to customize the layer’s name, color, visibility, and other settings.

To create and edit the options of a new layer or sublayer, select the Layers panel menu , and then select New Layer or New Sublayer.
