Set transparency for gradient meshes

Last updated on Sep 11, 2025

Learn how to set transparency for gradient meshes in Adobe Illustrator.

Select the mesh object using the Selection tool.

Select Window > Transparency.

Adjust the Opacity slider in the Transparency panel as needed. A value of 0% Opacity makes the object fully transparent, while a value of 100% Opacity makes it fully opaque.

A Mesh object is displayed on the artboard with the Transparency panel opened showcasing the Opacity slider.

Use the Transparency panel to set the Blending Mode.
Tip

When you save an Illustrator file containing gradient mesh objects with transparency to legacy formats like EPS or PDF, Illustrator retains the transparency by creating an opacity mask.
