Learn how to add colors to swatches in Adobe Illustrator for easy reuse.

Add all document colors

Select Window > Swatches.

Deselect all artwork and select Add Used Colors from the Swatches panel menu . Adobe Illustrator identifies colors used in the document that are not already in the panel, converts any process colors to global colors, and adds them as new swatches.
Add Used Colors is highlighted under the Swatches panel menu.
Select Add Used Colors to add document colors as new swatches.

Add colors from selected artwork

Select the artwork containing the colors you want to add to the Swatches panel.

Select Add Selected Colors from the Swatches panel menu.

Select New Swatch Group in the Swatches panel.

Select the desired options in the dialog box that appears. Colors are arranged and saved using the Hue Forward rule.
