Clip and invert opacity masks

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to clip and invert opacity masks to control how transparency is applied to your artwork.

Clipping confines the mask to the shape of the masking object, while inverting switches the light and dark areas that define transparency.

Select Window > Layers.

In the Layers panel, target the masked object layer marked with a dashed underline.

Select Window > Transparency.

The Transparency panel displays the following options: Blending Mode dropdown, Opacity slider, Opacity Mask thumbnails, Make/Release Opacity Mask, Clip and Invert Mask.
Adjust your artwork's transparency with an opacity mask.

In the Transparency panel, select:

  • Clip: To add a black background to the mask and crop the masked artwork to the boundaries of the masking object. Deselect it to turn off the clipping behavior. To make clipping a default setting for new opacity masks, select New Opacity Masks Are Clipping from the Transparency panel menu.
  • Invert Mask: To reverse the opacity of the masked artwork. It reverses the luminosity values of the masking object. For example, areas that are 90% transparent become 10% transparent after the mask is inverted. Deselect Invert Mask to return the mask to the original state. To invert all masks by default, select New Opacity Masks Are Inverted from the Transparency panel menu.
Note

Select Show Options from the Transparency panel menu if Clip and Invert Mask aren’t visible.
