Edit generated patterns

Last updated on Sep 11, 2025

Learn how to customize generated patterns using pattern settings.

Select Window > Generate Patterns.

In the Generate Patterns panel, hover over the variation, select More options   , and then select Edit Pattern.

Even when you edit a generated pattern from the Generate Patterns panel, the corresponding swatch in the Swatches panel (Window > Swatches) gets updated. The original variation in the Generate Patterns panel remains unchanged.

In the Pattern Options dialog box, adjust the following settings as needed:

  • Name: Type a new swatch name.
  • Width and Height: Type the desired dimensions for the pattern tile.
  • Size Tile to Art: Select to automatically fit the tile size to the artwork boundaries.
  • Move Tile with Art: Select to move the tile boundaries together with the artwork.
  • Overlap: Select an option to determine whether artwork in the tile overlaps in front of or behind adjacent tiles.
  • Copies: Select the number of tile copies to display in the preview.
  • Dim Copies to: Select and adjust the transparency of the repeated tiles in the preview.
  • Show Tile Edge: Select to display the tile boundaries while editing.
  • Show Swatch Bounds: Select to display the boundary edges of the pattern swatch while editing.
Note

You can't modify Tile Type and Brick Offset for a generated pattern.

Select Done in the pattern editing bar at the top of the canvas.
