Import DCS files

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to import DCS files to include high-end, pre-separated raster images with spot colors or CMYK separations in print layouts.

Desktop Color Separation (DCS) is a version of the standard EPS format.

  • DCS 1.0 supports only CMYK images.
  • DCS 2.0 supports multichannel CMYK and multiple spot colors, which appear in the Swatches panel when linked.
  • Illustrator recognizes clipping paths in DCS 1.0 and 2.0 files created in Photoshop.

In Adobe Illustrator, select File > Open and select the DCS file from your computer.

Caution

Illustrator can link DCS files but cannot open or embed them. For accurate output, use them only in workflows where the DCS file remains linked and is processed by a print Raster Image Processor (RIP) that supports separations.

To view DCS transparency interactions, select Window > Links. In the Links panel, select Panel Options from the Links panel menu , and then select Show DCS Transparency Interactions.
