Create new actions

Learn how to create and record custom actions in Illustrator to automate repetitive tasks and streamline your workflow.

When you create a new action, the commands and tools you use are added to the action until you stop recording.

Select Window > Actions.

In the Actions panel, select Create New Action icon.

In the New Action dialog box, enter Name, select an action Set, and then select the following:

  • Function Key: Select a keyboard shortcut from the dropdown menu, and then select Ctrl (Windows) or Command (macOS), along with Shift.
  • Color: Assign a color for display in Button Mode. You can select Button Mode from the Actions panel menu .
Note

In Windows, you cannot use F1 and Ctrl + F4 or Ctrl + F6 as function keys.

If you assign an action the same shortcut that is used for a command, the shortcut will apply the action rather than the command.

The New Action dialog box displays fields for naming the action, selecting an action set, assigning a function key, and selecting a color for Button Mode.
Create a new action by setting its name, set, shortcut key, and Button Mode color.

Select Record. The Begin Recording button in the Actions panel turns red.

Tip

When recording the Save As command, do not change the file name. If you enter a new name, Illustrator records it and reuses it each time you run the action. However, you can navigate to a different folder before saving to specify a new location without changing the file name.

Perform the operations and commands you want to record.

To stop recording, select Stop Playing/Recording.

To resume recording in the same action, select Start Recording icon from the Actions panel menu.
