Reflect or flip objects

Learn how to reflect or flip objects in Adobe Illustrator.

Reflect an object with the Free Transform tool

Select the object that you’d want to reflect using the Selection tool.

Select the Free Transform tool from the Tools panel.

Drag the handle of the bounding box past the opposite edge or handle until the object is at the desired level of reflection.

Tip

Press Shift key and drag a corner handle past the opposite handle to maintain the object’s proportions.

Reflect or flip object with the Reflect tool

Select the object that you’d want to reflect using the Selection tool.

Select the Reflect tool from the Tools panel.

Select anywhere in the artboard to define the first point of the invisible reflection axis.

Move the pointer to another location to define the other point of the axis, then perform one of the given steps as needed:

  • Click to flip over the selected object over the defined axis.

  • Press Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and click to set up the second point of the invisible axis to reflect a copy of the object.
  • Adjust the axis of reflection by dragging instead of clicking and Shift-drag to constrain the angle by 45 degrees.

Note

As you drag, the invisible reflection axis rotates around the first point set in Step 3. A reflected outline of the object appears. Release the mouse button when the outline is in the desired position.
